Compounded (503A) vs research-use peptides — how they differ

Published October 29, 2026 · Updated October 29, 2026 · Research use only

Search results after the 2026 compounding news often mix two different things: pharmacy compounding under section 503A, and research-use-only (RUO) vials sold as laboratory materials. This page keeps those lanes separate.

Compounded peptides (503A lane)

Under federal compounding law, a 503A compound is generally prepared by a state-licensed pharmacy (or certain other qualifying actors) for an identified patient pursuant to a prescription, using bulk substances and conditions that fit FDA/HHS rules. The October 2026 HHS interim enforcement-discretion policy describes when HHS does not intend to enforce against compounding with six named peptide bulk substances while bulks-list rulemaking continues. That policy has its own conditions (identity, manufacturing, testing, labeling, reporting, and more) in the HHS materials.

Research-use peptides (RUO lane)

peptide.prof sells lyophilized research vials and certain disposable research pens as laboratory research material. Pages state research use only, not for human or veterinary use, and the store does not provide dose or administration instructions. Payment is to peptide.prof; shipping is to a United States address after payment. That is a materials purchase for research workflows — not a compounded drug product and not a pharmacy prescription fill.
